Story
The mother Lilia remembers was not a particularly kind person.
A strict person. She had high expectations for Lilia.
Lilia's family had the ability to communicate with the dead for generations, and her mother hoped Lilia would awaken her abilities soon. The mansion was built near a cemetery, close to death, for that reason.
Despite numerous efforts, Lilia could not awaken her Weapon. Her mother's anxious words about the family line ending hovered around Lilia like a shadow.
Young Lilia wanted to deny all of it. She had no interest in Nemonic, Weapon, or the ability to see the dead. She wanted to play and eat delicious food with friends like other children her age.
However, because the foundation of her ability was related to dark things like death, solitude, and loneliness, Lilia could not approach anything bright and radiant like sunlight unless she awakened her Weapon.
Always alone, Lilia would hide in a coffin when she wanted to escape her mother's education. No one touched the coffins in the mortuary unless they were placing a body inside.
Lilia always used an empty coffin without a body. When she lay quietly inside with the lid closed, she felt a sense of peace, as if floating on water.
One day, as usual, Lilia entered the coffin and fell asleep, unable to resist the drowsiness. Her mother, inspecting the mortuary, thought there was a body in the coffin and sealed it to be buried in the cemetery.
Waking up late, Lilia was terrified to find the coffin wouldn't open and screamed in fear. Confronted with the fear of death for the first time, Lilia's mind went blank.
Ragged breathing, darkness without a hint of light, fading consciousness. Everything was pushing Lilia into despair.
"Wake up."
Someone whispered softly in Lilia's ear. Just as she was about to call the name of the one calling her in her fading consciousness, the coffin lid opened, and a bright light poured in. A gentle voice calling Lilia's name. Soft hands lifting her up.
"Grandmother..."
"Are you okay, dear?"
In her grandmother's arms, Lilia cried over the terrible memory. She wanted to erase the horrific memory from her mind. But the uninvited guest that suddenly appeared seemed unwilling to be forgotten, mocking Lilia.
"Grandmother. Who is that...?"
"Can you see that?"
Her grandmother's love. Ironically, that warm affection met with the pain, solitude, and loneliness of death, allowing Lilia to awaken her abilities.
The memory of that traumatic day remained as a Weapon in the form of a coffin, lingering around Lilia, never to be erased.
Lilia knows.
What lies inside that coffin. And the fact that the coffin wants her.
A young girl, small and tiny, before becoming a Soul Healer.
The girl's mother taught her about the various tasks of a Soul Healer. Listening to her mother's stories, the girl curiously asked,
"Soul Healers can talk to ghosts... So can't they tell people about their family who left first?"
"No. That's a taboo that Soul Healers must never break."
At her mother's firm words, the girl swallowed her question. But the question lingered, continuously circling in her mind. Why is it forbidden to convey the words of the dead to the living?
One day, the girl's mother spoke with a somber expression.
"Pack your things, we have somewhere to go."
"Where are we going?"
The mother replied briefly to the girl's question.
"Far away."
The weight in her mother's voice left the girl speechless. How long had they been traveling by carriage? Eventually, the girl and her mother arrived at a village.
The village was in utter ruin. It was filled with unknown vengeful spirits, with nothing intact. The girl, witnessing such a horrific sight for the first time, couldn't utter a word.
"This is what happens when a Soul Healer conveys the words of the dead to the living."
In a bitter voice, the mother explained what had happened in this village.
The young men of the village had a friend who died young. Saddened by their friend's departure, they asked the village Soul Healer for help, and the kind-hearted Soul Healer conveyed the words of the departed friend to them. The young men were overjoyed to be able to talk to their friend who had passed away.
But as time passed, the young men began to forget their deceased friend. However, the deceased friend couldn't accept this. Unlike the living young men, he had no future to move forward to.
The deceased friend began to grow jealous of the living. Jealousy turned to anger, and anger to hatred. Before the Soul Healer could realize, the friend had quickly become a vengeful spirit and attacked the young men who had forgotten him.
Those attacked by the vengeful spirit became vengeful spirits themselves. The vengeful spirits sought new victims. The rapidly increasing number of vengeful spirits turned the village into a land of death, with no living soul left.
"Never forget what you saw today."
Huh? Me? I'm a former wandering ghost, Rainy. Now, I've settled in the cemetery that Lilia tends to.
As I said, I used to be a wandering ghost. I really loved traveling. So even after I died, I would wander around, traveling here and there.
One day, I met a Soul Healer. That Soul Healer tried to capture me, calling me a wandering ghost. I later found out that wandering ghosts are not well-regarded among Soul Healers. Most wandering ghosts are vengeful spirits with strong grudges, roaming the world in search of their revenge targets.
So every Soul Healer I encountered on my travels tried to capture me. But I'm just a good ghost who loves traveling! The pain I had to endure while being chased by Soul Healers...!
After being chased by countless Soul Healers, I arrived at this cemetery. And that's where I met Lilia. To think I'd meet a Soul Healer in a place I fled to escape them! My heart almost dropped. Oh, of course, I don't have a heart.
But Lilia accepted me without a word, even knowing I was a wandering ghost. She even suggested I stay here if I was tired. Just as I was weary of traveling, I accepted Lilia's offer and decided to stay here.
Lilia is really a kind child. But she gets very lonely. She always wants to make friends. Though her sense for making friends is disastrously lacking. It makes me wonder what kind of childhood she had.
The admirable thing is that she never gives up trying to make friends. The problem might be that her efforts are misguided.
Sometimes, Lilia practices talking to friends by speaking to dolls or trees. Have you ever seen Lilia talking to a doll in a dark place? Oh, it's really not good for the heart. Again, I don't have a heart, but still.
I really hope Lilia finds a good friend. Seeing her practice making friends alone brings tears to my eyes. I truly wish she finds a wonderful friend.
Perhaps... someone like you?
Animal spirits are incredibly difficult to encounter.
Most of the time, the reason the deceased become spirits is due to lingering attachments to life. There are many reasons, such as family left behind, unfulfilled tasks, or unrealized love...
However, animals... they don't have as strong a sense of self as humans... so their attachments aren't as significant... It's truly rare for an animal to have such strong attachments that they become a spirit...
Occasionally... animals that were truly loved by their owners become spirits... because their life, filled with their owner's love, was so happy that they can't bear to leave for the afterlife...
Such spirits stay by their owner's side, protecting them until the end... From a Soul Healer's perspective... they are quite troublesome... Sending them to the afterlife is the natural order, but... they are good spirits caring for their owners...
Conversely, there are animals that become spirits out of resentment... For an animal with a weak sense of self to hold such a grudge that they can't leave for the afterlife... it must be an incredibly strong resentment... A resentment so strong that we can't even imagine...
That's why such animal spirits are extremely powerful and ferocious... Driven by their grudges, they attack indiscriminately... They are far more dangerous than most human spirits... The records of Soul Healers show that the grudges of animal spirits have always brought about terrible disasters...
Though it's unlikely, if you ever encounter such a vengeful spirit, be careful...
You never know what they might do to you...
