Lore

In the long eons of her vigil, Tawil once set foot upon a mortal realm. Unseen, she walked the fringes of the mortal world, quietly observing the deeds of every living thing. On an ordinary nightfall, a dense sea of lights in the city's outskirts caught her eye. Stage settings, songs and dances, vendors hawking pastries, children frolicking, idlers raising cups in hearty toasts. It was the very breath of life, a fleeting moment of respite. Enchanted, she could not help but take mortal form. "Greetings. One sugar painting, please." "Right away, miss. What shall I draw for you?" Tawil tilted her head gently. She only remembered to offer the unclaimed coins she had chanced upon, forgetting entirely that she could voice a wish of her own. "If you can't decide, how about I draw one in your likeness? You're as beautiful as a goddess." Tawil smiled and nodded. The vendor called out cheerfully, raised a ladle of melted sugar and began to paint. Drip. Drip. What fell upon the stone slab was not honey-colored syrup. But rain—black rain. Black ichor dripped from an unfathomable height, melting open a horrific rift across the sky. Then, Tawil began to fall upward. It was the world that was sinking. The vendor's smile froze in her memory, then drowned along with all else in the black ocean. All reduced to a mere speck among countless dead stars, fading into a past forever beyond her reach. This was the upheaval she had caused, and the retribution she was meant to bear. She gazed into the distance, silent and still. She simply kept falling upward. For this was the place she was meant to guard—the Silver Gate that "transcends time and space". Here she would keep watch, for all eternity.
