Lore

With reason as a guiding light, one can dispel the mist of life. Once upon a time, Mouchette had heard such words. Perhaps it was a technician from Thoreau Company casually expressing this sentiment while debugging a mist lamp? Or maybe it was a quip from a passerby during a visit to the Filingen restaurant? Mouchette had forgotten; all she could clearly remember was the habitual social smile on her face when she heard those words, and the sarcasm hidden behind that smile. "Guiding light? Ha, what an old-fashioned relic. People use flashlights these days." She wasn't unaware that it was just a metaphor; she simply scoffed at the idea. Because one day, she would die. And after death, what reason, what mist, would remain—she would be completely liberated from this world. That was a reasonable and inevitable conclusion. All she needed to do was enjoy the process before this "inevitability" arrived. But no one had ever told her that "inevitability" could also encounter "unexpectedness." Similar mist, similar predicaments, yet there were no mist lamps, no investigation teams, none of the familiar things. Her axe could sever the monsters of the world, but it could not cut through the mist born of her own loneliness and confusion. Can she go back? Will she go back? When can she go back... One question after another surfaced from her heart, like an invisible deep water, slowly engulfing her soul. At this moment, the only thought in her mind, the entirety of her thoughts, was— Maintain reason. Don't go insane! Don't go insane! Don't go insane! Whether facing the mist of that world, the mist of this world, or the mist within her heart. For the sake of returning once more.
