Lilia

A shy and introverted girl who is a Condoler.

Story
The mother in Lilia's memory was not an amiable person.
She was strict and demanding, and had high expectations for Lilia.
Lilia's family has had the ability to communicate with the dead for generations, and Lilia's mother hoped that her daughter could awaken this power as soon as possible. So she built her house in a cemetery, a place close to death.
However, no matter how hard Lilia tried, she was unable to awaken her "weapon". Her mother's words, mixed with anxiety and worry, surrounded Lilia all the time like a shadow.
Young Lilia just wanted to deny it all. She had no interest in Nemonics, weapons, or the ability to see the dead. She just wanted to play and laugh with other children her age.
The awakening of the ability is essentially related to dark emotions such as death, loneliness, and sadness, which prevented Lilia from approaching anything as bright and brilliant as the sun before her weapon awakened.
Whenever the lonely Lilia could not stand her mother's high-pressure education, she would hide in the coffin because no one would touch the coffin in the mortuary room unless they needed to bury a corpse.
Lilia always used the empty coffin without a corpse in it. As long as she entered it, closed the coffin lid, and lay quietly, she felt like she was floating on the water and had a moment of peace.
One day, Lilia lay in the coffin as usual, but she couldn't help but fall asleep. Her mother, who was patrolling the burial room, thought that the coffin contained a dead body, so she closed the coffin lid and sealed it so that it could be sent to the cemetery for burial.
When Lilia woke up, she found herself trapped in a coffin that could not be opened. She was so scared that she screamed loudly. Facing the fear of impending death, her mind went blank.
The rapid breathing, the pitch-black darkness, and the gradually blurring consciousness slowly pushed Lilia into the abyss of despair.
"Wake up!"
Someone whispered in Lilia's ear when she gradually became unconscious. Lilia tried hard to call out the name of the person who called her. Right at that moment, the coffin lid suddenly opened, and dazzling light poured in. She heard someone calling her softly, and then a pair of gentle hands picked her up.
"Grandma..."
"Lilia, are you alright?"
Lilia hugged her grandmother tightly and cried badly for the terrible experience. How much she hoped to completely forget this terrible memory. But the unexpected guest looked at her with a mocking expression, as if he wanted Lilia to never forget this memory.
"Grandma, who is she...?"
"Can you see her?"
Her grandmother's love brought her warmth, but paradoxically, it was this warm love combined with the pain and loneliness of death that awakened her weapon.
The memory of that day was like a nightmare. It turned into a coffin-shaped weapon and has always accompanied Lilia.
Lilia knows very well
what's in the coffin and that it has been longing for her.
The little girl before she became a Condoler.
The girl's mother taught her about the various tasks of a Condoler. Listening to her mother's story, the girl asked curiously:
"Can't a Condoler talk to ghosts...? Wouldn't it be possible to convey the words of those who left to everyone this way?"
"No. That is a taboo that a Condoler must never violate."
The girl swallowed her doubt at her mother's firm tone, but the question kept lingering in her mind. Why can't the words of the dead be conveyed to the living?
One day, the girl's mother said with a heavy face:
"We have to go somewhere, let's pack our bags."
"Where are we going?"
The mother answered the girl briefly:
"Somewhere far away."
The girl didn't dare to ask more questions because of her mother's heavy tone. After setting out in the carriage for an unknown period of time, the girl and her mother finally arrived at a village.
The scene in the village was horrible. There is not a single intact place in the abandoned village, and unknown evil spirits are everywhere. Seeing such a horrible scene for the first time, the girl was so frightened that she was speechless.
"This is the result of the Condoler conveying the words of the dead to the living."
Her mother told her what happened in the village in a bitter voice.
The youngsters in the village had a friend who died young. In order to mourn their friend, they asked the village Condoler for help, and the kind-hearted Condoler conveyed the words of the deceased to them. The youngsters were very happy to be able to talk to their dead friend.
However, as time passed, the youngsters gradually forgot this friend. But the dead friend couldn't accept this. Unlike the youngsters who were still alive, he had no future.
The dead one began to envy the living. Jealousy leads to anger, and anger turns to hatred. Before the Condoler knew it, the dead friend had become a ghost, attacking youngsters who had forgotten him.
People attacked by evil spirits will also become evil spirits, and the evil spirits will look for new targets. As the number of evil spirits increased rapidly, the village eventually turned into a dead land with no living people.
"Don't ever forget what you saw today."
Huh? Me? I'm Renee, a former wandering ghost. Now, I live in a graveyard managed by Lilia.
Like I said, I used to be a wandering ghost. I loved traveling so much that even after death, I roamed the world.
Then one day, I met a condoler. The moment they saw me, they tried to capture me. Turns out, wandering ghosts aren't exactly popular among condolers. Most of them are vengeful spirits, driven by hatred, seeking revenge.
So every condoler I ran into tried to hunt me down. But I wasn't one of those ghosts! I was just a nice little spirit who loved to travel! Do you know how exhausting it is to be chased everywhere?
After running for what felt like forever, I ended up here, in this graveyard. And who do I meet? Another condoler—Lilia. I nearly had a heart attack! Oh, right, I don't have a heart.
But to my surprise, Lilia didn't try to exorcise me. Instead, she welcomed me. She even said, "If you're tired, you can rest here." I was exhausted from all the running, so I took her up on the offer and stayed.
Lilia is a kind soul. But she's also incredibly lonely. She longs for friends. Unfortunately… she's terrible at making them. I really wonder what kind of childhood she had.
To her credit, she never stops trying. The problem is… her approach is a little off.
Sometimes, she practices talking to friends by speaking to dolls and trees. Ever seen her whispering to a doll in a dark corner? It's terrifying, just like a heart attack. Ah, and just to remind you—I don't have a heart.
I really hope Lilia can make good friends. Seeing her practicing conversations with her friends alone really makes me want to cry. I really hope she can make good friends.
For example...someone like you?
Animal ghosts are very rare to encounter.
Most ghosts exist because they have unfinished business. Loved ones, regrets, unfulfilled desires.
But animals don't have the same level of self-awareness as humans, so they usually don't linger. For an animal to become a ghost, its attachment must be incredibly strong.
Sometimes, pets deeply loved by their owners refuse to leave, staying behind to protect them.
For Condolers like me, these ghosts are tricky. Sending ghosts to the afterlife is part of the job, but these ones… they're not malevolent. They just want to stay with the people they loved.
On the other hand, there are also vengeful animal ghosts. For an animal, whose self-awareness is weak, to hold onto pure hatred… that means the resentment is beyond imagination.
So, these animal ghosts are usually incredibly powerful and ferocious… They attack anyone in sight, without discrimination… Far more dangerous than ordinary lingering souls… According to Condolers' records, every animal ghost born from deep resentment has brought forth terrible disasters…
Though such cases are rare, if you ever encounter one, be extremely cautious…
Because you'll never know what it might do to you…
