The Terrifying Humanoid Weapon
"Forget it, let's go back. Sneaking up here like this feels kinda like breaking and entering. Besides, she's just a special-admit student, right? If we just wait, we can see her in class later."
"She's hard to catch during class. You haven't even seen the weapon she has behind her! Ah, looks like she's not here today. Weird, though. She used to be here every day..."
What the two of them never noticed was that the special-admit student they were talking about—Firefly—had just flown over their heads.
"Today is the weekly sneak-out day!"
Firefly did not dislike her daily life. The town had houses that kept her dry and warm, and there was hot food to eat. But it did not have any "friends" who would play with her. Aside from Canace, everyone turned and walked away the moment they saw her.
It was so boring...
She flew out past the city and over the river. The world below gradually turned green, and she picked a forest with a pretty shape and dropped down into it.
It was still a little way from the Monolith, but there were plenty of monsters along the way.
Maybe they would be willing to play hide-and-seek with her, Firefly thought.
When she landed, she stepped on something soft.
It was a stuffed toy caked in mud and dirty water. Beneath all that grime, it was a pink teddy bear.
Firefly picked it up and looked around, but there was no sign of any Trekker nearby.
"Did you get separated from your friend?"
Holding the grimy pink bear in her arms, Firefly went from one monster to the next, asking after its owner.
"Do you know who dropped this?"
"I'm not trying to play with you. I'm looking for the little bear's friend!"
"Have you seen... Ah, it ran away..."
...
By the time it started getting dark, the pink bear still had not found its owner.
"The sun's going down. Professor said I have to be back before dark."
Firefly crouched by the river and gave the pink bear a bath. Then she brought it back to the academy and set it by the window in her room to dry.
"Tomorrow, let's go to the Monolith and ask others."
"Tomorrow... How am I going to sneak out?"
"When will I make a friend who'll play with me?"
Clutching a penguin plushie in her arms, Firefly stared at the little bear's shadow on the windowsill and drifted off to sleep.
First Encounter
Perhaps it was simply because she saw a reflection of her former self, who had once lost her freedom.
"This... Fly!"
Firefly had only just learned a few words. Sitting in the corner, she pointed at her remote cannons and then at Canace, gesturing with great seriousness as she tried to make herself understood.
"Up! High! Together!"
"You!"
Canace studied her earnest little face, trying to work out what she meant. Firefly kept gesturing for a while, then seemed to realize Canace still did not understand. She got to her feet, grabbed Canace's hand, and tried to lift her up into the air. But she was still too small to carry an adult. The cannons behind her bobbed up and down, unsteady in the air, like a firefly beating its wings as hard as it could.
So that was what she had meant. She wanted to take Canace flying with her.
Canace laughed and stroked her hair.
"You're still little, Firefly. You're not strong enough yet. Eat plenty, and one day you'll be able to carry me with you."
Firefly tilted her head, not looking as though she had fully understood. Long sentences were still difficult for her. But she could tell from Canace's voice that she was being gentle, and she nodded very seriously.
A few days later, screams started ringing out all over campus. By the time Canace arrived, Firefly was flying low over the training field like a hawk diving on prey, swooping down to snatch up the younger children.
Then she spotted Canace in the distance. Grabbing hold of a little girl, she flew straight over to her, her face bright with anticipation, plainly waiting to be praised: look, I can pick someone up and fly with them now!
It seemed she had gotten the wrong idea....
Weapon Anecdote: Avalanche
Then the girl appeared. She reached out and laid a hand on it, nothing more than a curious touch. But the instant her palm made contact, the "device" lit up. It split into four parts, circled above her head a few times, then came to rest behind her. It was a gift she had been born with—more than that, it felt like fate.
"... New friend?"
The girl spun around where she stood, trying to face this sudden new "friend," but she was like a kitten chasing its own tail, never quite able to catch it.
After turning around a few times, she gave up. It felt pretty nice, really, having this friend stay behind her all the time.
"Well, let us play together from now on...!"
Her "friend" responded to that thought. The girl's feet slowly lifted from the ground until she was floating in the air.
Then the four pillar-like "wings" swung forward at once, unleashing a torrent of heat fierce enough to destroy anything in its path.
The girl laughed happily in mid-air.
"This is so fun!"
She was still too young to understand what this weapon would one day bring her...
