Machina

An engineering girl from Rigor constantly chased by money.
She’s highly skilled, but her ideas are often far-fetched, with equal parts success and failure. Years of struggling to fund her experiments made her lose confidence and develop an obsession with money.

Story
What a mess. Absolutely chaotic.
A girl sat at a desk, expressionless, watching a woman reading.
Libertas, leader of the Kamp Mercenary Corps. Their first meeting wasn’t pleasant.
Machina, who had been traveling alone, was trapped by a criminal group. She incurred massive debt and was forced to work for them, endlessly producing strange items with unknown purposes.
Her escape came unexpectedly. When the mercenaries accepted a job from the group, they grew suspicious of a young girl working there. Upon investigation, they uncovered the group’s true identity and learned Machina had been tricked. Libertas threw a bag of compensation at the boss’s face and took Machina away.
That was one hour ago.
“U-um…”
“What is it?”
“What… what happens to me now?”
“What do you mean?”
“The money you gave me when you took me out… you said it was a loan…”
“That’s right. Until you pay it back, you’re part of the Kamp Mercenary Corps.”
“So… what do I have to do…?”
She thought that after spending that much to get her out, Libertas would make her do something dangerous.
But the answer completely surprised her.
“What do you mean…?”
Libertas sounded genuinely confused. Machina stared at her blankly.
“Honestly, I haven’t thought about that.”
“Uh… then I…”
“Just do what you want. Whether it’s hunting monsters, repairing weapons, or doing engineering research.”
Libertas smiled at her.
“This bond may have started with debt, but welcome to the Kamp Mercenary Corps.”
“There’s going to be a war.”
The vice leader suddenly appeared and dropped a bomb on the girl.
“A war?”
“That’s right. We’ll probably go to war with the Moon Shadow Cult.”
Upon hearing Enas, Machina felt her blood freeze. The Kamp Mercenary Corps was originally founded by Libertas and Enas to pursue the Moon Shadow Cult. Even though they’ve since gained many different members, that goal hasn’t changed.
“Machina, go evacuate with the others. Wait at Timber Valley. This time it’ll be a real war…”
“I… I want to fight too!”
Hearing that, Enas opened her eyes wide in surprise.
“You don’t need to fight. You’re not a fighter.”
“I… I know. Even if I fight, I won’t help much… but…”
I’m scared, but I won’t run away. Because this is no longer just a mercenary group—it’s my home. I have people I want to protect. Things I must protect.
“But… I don’t want to abandon my friends and run away.”
Hearing that, Enas paused, then smiled.
“I’m counting on you, Machina.”
Our family? We were really poor. So poor I had to start working when I was seven. But my parents were always kind. Even if we had no money, they tried their best to buy me toys I liked. Though I always took them apart, which gave them headaches.
They lived for me. So when I had the chance to learn engineering from a master, they were so happy. Following his advice, I set off alone. They gave me all the money they’d saved as travel funds. I started the journey full of hope…
But the money ran out quickly. My experiments cost a lot. I worked many jobs to earn money but got caught in a huge scam. Just when I hit rock bottom, Leader Libertas saved me. She paid off my debt under the excuse of a loan, and I joined the Kamp Mercenary Corps to repay it.
You ask if she reminds me about the debt? No… she’s never brought it up. Not even once. She said I can’t leave until I’ve paid it off, but I think if I truly wanted to go, she’d let me. That’s the kind of person she is.
The one who chases me about the debt… isn’t her. It’s someone else. My salary barely covers experiments after the debt cuts. That’s why I…
Sigh… I know. Vice Leader Enas already told me—don’t let the debt grow… but I can’t not do my research… b-but I really am trying to pay it off! I’ve even started lowering the principal lately!
Hehe… so, {account:name}, do you have any savings? If you can… could you lend me a little… uh… wait! Let me finish…!
